On December 5th, Final Competition of Shaan’xi Province for the 20th“21st Century Cup” National English Speaking Competition was successfully held in the Science Center of Xi’an Jiaotong University. The contest was sponsored by China Daily and Coca-Cola's China business unit, organized by the 21st Century English Education Media and co-organized by the International English Union, U.S World English Teachers’ Association, and U.S Education and Testing Service Center and other institutes.
The theme of this competition “Seeing is not Believing” was a challenge for contestants’ critical thinking ability. Han Xiaowen, an English major student of Grade 2013 from School of Foreign Studies of Xi’an Jiaotong University won the championship and entered the National Grand Final. She shared with us her exchange student life at Fu Jen Catholic University and internship in New York. Her excellent performance won the applause from the judges and audience.Another two contestants, Wang YuKe, an English major student of Grade 2013, and Shen Yiling, an English and French double-major student of Grade 2012 won the First Class Award and Second Class Award respectively. Advisor Chang Hong was awarded the “Excellent Advisor”. The awards won by the contestants from our university listed No.1 in Shaanxi Province for 5 consecutive years.
Afterthe online audition, campus audition and telephone interviewin the early rounds,18 participants entered the provincial final competition. They came fromXi`an International Studies University, Northwestern Polytechnic University and other universities. They delivered excellent speeches on the theme of“Seeing is not Believing”.The competition consisted of three parts:the prepared speech (3 minutes),impromptu speech(2 minutes) and Q&A (2 minutes). The atmosphere was with multi-climaxes. The contestants’ wonderful performance showed us the global vision of the post-90ers.
