I. History
When Jiaotong University was founded, the Division of Western Languages was set up. In the 24th year of Guangxu (1898), the Translation Academy was established. In the 2nd year of Xuantong (1910), the Department of Western Languages was instituted, covering English, German, French, Latin and other subjects. In the year 1928, the Department of Foreign Literature was founded, which was renamed the English Section and Foreign Language Teaching and Research Section.
Thecurrent Department of English grew from theDepartment of Technical English of Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU),which startedenrollment in 1979. In the year 2000,itmerged theDepartment of Technical English of XJTU,the Department ofMedical English of the former Xi'an Medical University, andthe Department ofFinancial English of the former ShaanxiInstitute of Finance and Economics.
II. Faculties
There are 28 full-time teachers, including 6 professors and 17 associate professors. All teachers have master's degree, and 43% hold a doctoral degree. All teachers have experiences of studying or academic visits abroad.
III. Disciplinary Features
The Department offers academic modules in Literature, Translation, Linguistics, International Studies, and Bilingualism (English-French, English-Russian,and English-German).
On the basis of cultivating practical language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, the Department makes full use of resources of XJTU to optimize students' scope of knowledge, attaching great importance to fostering students' comprehensive abilities, including application of language skills, awareness of interdisciplinary studies, intercultural thinking skills, and humanistic sentiment.
Students of the English Department have won many awards in various provincial, national and international events.
IV. Objectives of Education
The Department aims to cultivate innovative professionals with internationalperspectives and competitiveness. Graduates are supposedtotake jobs intranslation, teaching, editing, research or managerial positions.
